COFCO International’s fire safety team protects people and nature
In its sugar plantations in Brazil, COFCO International operates its own fire brigade, overseen and supported by a control centre, to increase its response rate to any fires in the fields. A team of highly trained employees monitors for various scenarios, and in the case of an incident directs the closest team to the location in need.
“When a fire is detected, the nearest fire safety team identifies how best to address the incident in a way that protects people, animals and vegetation in and around our plantations,” says Kassia Barbosa Cajuela, Environmental Coordinator, COFCO Brazil.
Importantly, as part of its emergency response plan, the company runs simulations each year across its industrial, agricultural and automotive teams, in order to ensure that everyone knows how to react in the event of an emergency. The scenarios covered include chemical leaks, overturned trucks or a human victim on a plantation . This forms part of the company’s health and safety strategy to keep its employees, partners and communities safe. The plan prioritises continuous improvement and raising awareness of workplace risks.
“These simulations are very important, as they allow us to address the situation efficiently, should it occur in reality,” says Kassia Cajuela. “In this way, we strive to ensure a more rapid and efficient response.”
